Meet Robin
The Beginning
I have always had a passion for empathically teaching, caring for, and helping children and families through hard times. It started from a young age; I was an incredibly shy girl. Shy like hiding under my teacher's desk all day, shy. Even today, to consider myself outgoing is one of the greatest achievements of my life! I began to come out of my shell when I was an adolescent, just to be faced with middle school, mean girls, boys, body changes, and a host of new emotions (so to my adolescent groups…I get it!). I also began to have issues in school due to distractibility, which I later went on to be diagnosed with ADHD, so I come to you being able to see all sides of behavior, which I would consider a superpower 😊
I studied English Literature and got my BA from Montana State University. I realized that my heart was for stories and writing, and hearing other’s challenges from all walks of life was especially poignant for me. While I was in college, my little sister sustained a traumatic brain injury due to a car accident, leaving her permanently disabled. I sought therapy during this time, where I was introduced to talk therapy and mindfulness, both were immensely helpful!
After helping my family nurse my sister back to health, I decided to get an MA in School Counseling to help young children, adolescents, and teens as well as their families through normal and tragic transitions. While at UC-Denver, I had some amazing professors who opened my mind to multicultural issues and giving voice to the voiceless, which is a passion today.
After earning my master’s in counseling, I have had the privilege of working with a diverse range of people. As a Court Appointed Child Advocate, I have been able to see children go from foster through adoption and the unique, confusing, and beautiful experience that can be. As a school counselor and mental health call center volunteer, I have experienced the importance of staying regulated amid crisis, working as a team to support students, and instilling curiosity and normalizing the strange times that are childhood, adolescence, and teen years. During my time in these settings I have gained experience in group counseling, play therapy, social skills coaching, and helping children learn to love themselves for who they are and thrive at home and school.
Working with Me
Play is the natural medium of communication for children. My practice is a combination of child-centered play therapy, mindfulness, and working with the nervous system through synergetic play therapy. A session could include a calm moment at the beginning where we listen to our breath, followed by the client-led play. I’ll build a trusting relationship with your child where they learn that the playroom is a safe place to experience and process their feelings. I like to include a child's interests, which could incorporate making art, or using fairytales to process experiences and overcome problems, and playing with fun toys that will help us work through emotions.
